Folk art

Traditional folk art. National folk costumes, knitted mittens, wool socks, tablecloths in an exhibition. This could easily become a boring, dust-gathering documentation about old, outdated handicraft. But it is not!

The presentation of the artworks is an artwork itself. The traditional patterns and clothings are dancing, hanging, walking and shouting at you. It is a pleasure walking around, even if I am not able to recognize all patterns from all different parts of Estonia. It is both about finding those artists and patterns from your own region, and it is about discovering new.

This is an exhibition showing the love and passion of those making, distributing and collecting traditional art, and the creativity and playfulness that is inherent in traditional art. This fits well with the duality of tradition-loving and progress-loving Estonia, with immense song- and dance-festivals, folkmusic festivals popping up everywhere, in the probably most digitalized and smartphonized country in Europe.
